Following in quick procession from his latest release 'Like A Heart Won't Beat', Skinny Pelembe has released 'Oh, Silly George'.
‘Oh, Silly George’ examines the feelings of isolation that can arise while living in a foreign land. Its disorienting snapshots are accentuated by an arresting, Afrobeat-meets-8-bit riff, drawing influence from a record collection including everything from hip-hop to country with every beat between.
Despite the song highlighting the feelings of being a “foreigner” in South Africa, and then in England, Skinny Pelembe nods nostalgically to his childhood. It’s a fascinating, moreish glimpse into the world of a complex and brilliant artist whose story is just being written.
Speaking about the track, Skinny Pelembe says:
“Then, being a foreigner in a new place. Working for the big Rand. Now, being a foreigner back on home soil. A few random snapshots and vignettes of someone's life, who was very dear to me. Someone asked me if George is England. Wasn't when I wrote it, and it still isn't, but I like that idea. Anyway, I'm not here to spoon feed you the meanings of all this, do some of the graft yourself. Lots of trying to make me and Malcolm sound sampled. Fucking 1, and 2 beat (not bars, beats) chops on the drums and guitar. An extremely considered but ramshackle groove. I was hearing early Macca, but Malc reckons the synths sound a bit Wham! That might be a bad thing, but sometimes bad feels good.”
Skinny Pelembe will play his first live show of 2023 at The Social, London on 25th January, followed by a show at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studios on 2nd February as a part of Independent Venue Week - stay tuned for our show coverage.
