From model and DJ to fully-fledged musician, Betty is bringing her energising indie-pop sound to the UK underground, playing into the grit and gloom of her London roots.
East London-hailing musician Betty first stepped onto the music scene with a pair of CDJs and a love for the capital’s nightlife. But with a desire to perform as a young child, she soon made the pivot to creating her own music. Now over the last two years she’s been putting in the work, releasing a string of her own singles as a singer-songwriter, and we’re still just getting to know her sound.
Each of her releases across the last two years have arrived with an element of surprise, as she’s weaved through fast paced indie bops, grunge-y ballads and spaced-out love letters. Yet no matter the genre Betty jumps on, every track has one identifying stamp: her distinctive and playful grittiness.
Last week she dropped another single titled ‘Not Enough’, ahead of her debut EP, ‘Mind over Matters’. The exuberant indie release produced by UK indie-pop veteran Oscar Scheller, is a commotion of melodies, vivacious guitar riffs and all the throwback factor of a 00s bubblegum-pop belter.
Betty calls the track “a sad concept on a hype song”, as she lays out her own self-destructive nature and its ability to welcome havoc into her relationships. Betty pairs this frenetic release with a DIY visual, showcasing the East London musician letting loose on a night out in New York, directed by photographer Tyrell Hampton.
Betty has given us a delectable glimpse into what an extended project will look like from her. As she continues to unravel her musical identity, we can look forward to all the sonic ups and downs, and experimentation she’ll provide us. It’s certain she’s making her mark as the UK underground’s next gritty indie-pop princess.
