We are now nearing the end of 2025 as winter begins to settle in. Best albums of the year lists, unavoidable Spotify Wrapped posts, and you can’t forget Record Store Day. It's been a massive year for music, with new talent emerging onto the scene alongside artists who have been honing their craft for years, also gaining renewed exposure. With the festive holidays approaching, many begin to reflect on 2025 as a whole; how it has changed them, what has changed, and what will change.

I begin with this anecdote because it perfectly illustrates the latest release from South London rapper Saiming. Titled Give Thanks and Breathe and released in collaboration with fellow rapper Finn Foxell and producer Bexblu, it sees the emerging artist reflecting on the past year and looking ahead with a determined mindset, and what a year it has been for him. With his debut project, what’s the alternative? gaining critical acclaim alongside sharing stages with Saba and Ghetts, he’s maintained consistency with his releases, and this final offering of the year highlights his strength in collaboration.

‘Lean On Me’ starts with sombre piano chords and gentle drums, leading into melodic guitar riffs that soar. The musical chameleon Finn Foxell showcases his sharp lyrical ability, opening with buttery-smooth flows that complement the drums behind him and seamlessly blending into Saiming’s verse. Throughout the project, the lyrics are uplifting and reflective. This particular song emphasises the power of community and recognising when you need to rely on others: “There’s strength in people reaching for assistance.”These tender lyrics fit perfectly with BexBlu’s sample-rich production, complemented by gospel backing vocals.

The three tracks complement each other with familiar arrangements, but each song has its own quirks that prevent them from becoming repetitive. ‘Aardvark’ begins with Foxell crooning over a punchy drum line, with twinkling percussion tying everything together. Saiming’s writing truly excels on this track; a stern delivery paired with poetic wordplay makes it an absolute pleasure to listen to: “Understanding is harder when I’m lost.” Maintaining the momentum, the heavy hitter known as Paul Stephan absolutely nails his guest verse, with powerful bars that conclude the track on a high note.

The final track, ‘Keep my Vices’, is easily the most infectious song here: delectable trumpets and weighty bass lines blend with genuinely enjoyable hooks. The inspirational lyricism is firing on all cylinders; the atmosphere on display here is impeccable. BexBlu is not a new name to listeners already familiar with Saiming, but especially here, he’s delivering absolute gold in the soundscape department. You can feel the collaborative spirit shine through every aspect of this EP. Not one element, not one bar, not even one chord feels out of place here.

Saiming concludes this year with a small but impactful project that is full of warmth and complexity without overwhelming the listener. This also provides a good introduction to newcomers to either artist, as the tracks allow each artist to shine while ensuring neither overpowers the other. As we approach the new year, Give Thanks and Breathe’ reminds its listeners to do exactly that in the smoothest way possible.
