Matilda Cole is kicking off 2024 with the powerful new single, 'Big Mouth,' serving as a bold statement on the social issues women face daily, inspired by a personal encounter that left a lasting impact.
Following her 2020 release 'The High Dive' EP, Matilda Cole has expanded her musical horizons with 'Big Mouth'. Produced by Will Bloomfield and co-written with Dom Anca, the track opens with fast, plucky electric riffs and smart percussive elements. Matilda's storytelling is front and center, culminating in a rousing chorus that declares, "I want to punch your lights out, I want to start a fight." This anthem of empowerment addresses the frustrations and fantasies of violence that many women experience but rarely act on In discussing the single, Matilda shared;
“’Big Mouth’ was inspired when I was outside Dalston Superstore; there was this man outside who asked if I wanted to go on a date but when I told him I have a girlfriend he was incredibly enraged about it. Nothing is resolved by fighting, but all I wanted to do in that moment was fight. I just had to breathe and walk away, and the next day I went to a session and wrote 'Big Mouth' about all the fantasies you create about violence that you never follow through with. It’s about women being taught that we’re weaker than men, but realistically we’ve never been given the tools to deal with stuff like this.”
Beyond her music, Matilda is a beacon for female empowerment, co-founding Loud LDN, a collective championing female and genderqueer creatives, now boasting over 150 members who have gained support from both the BBC and NME, and hosted a Spotify 'Our Generation' event.
Involved in every aspect of her music, from production to artwork and self-producing her videos, Matilda Cole is a true creative. Her work seamlessly bridges music with modelling, fashion, and her passion for vintage clothing and Greek mythology. With a wealth of new music slated for release throughout the year, 2024 is shaping up to be a milestone year for this rising star.
'Big Mouth' is a bold and empowering anthem that sets the stage for Matilda Cole's upcoming EP 'Pomegranate'. As she continues to push boundaries and address pressing social issues through her music, Matilda is establishing herself as one of the most compelling new voices in the UK music scene.
