YAZ LEÓN SHINES ON ENTHRALLING DEBUT EP, 'BLEACH'

With the London-music scene being a mosaic of all things rap, R&B and neo-soul, we’re at no loss of enticing lyricists and talented vocalists to choose from. It’s in this same arena that we were first introduced to the Spanish-Iraqi London-based vocalist and producer Yaz León.

León first arrived on the scene in 2020 with her self-assured neo soul-pop fusion sound, reminiscent of Cleo Sol and Pip Millet. However, in recent years we’ve seen her seamlessly transition into more alt-leaning territory, as she’s showcased in the shoegaze-y and jazz percussive ‘I Don’t Mind’. León has continued this experimentation in her more recent string of 2024 singles, with tracks ‘4th Wall’ and ‘Mouthwash’ repping both dark R&B in one, and tender indie vibes in the other. The London-hailing musician’s latest releases have been teeing up a new sonic identity, and one that’s heard loud and clear in her debut EP ‘Bleach’, released last Wednesday.

‘Bleach’ is a complete success from the UK riser, acting as an introduction to her musical versatility. The 9-track EP is full of tender and acoustic sonics melded with electronic flairs, and harder-hitting production that blends with León’s ever-smooth R&B vocals. In its entirety ‘Bleach’ handles the human experience, though track-by-track we hear her chronicle moments that are naked and candid, getting to know her in a way that's more personal than ever before.

“Bleach is my internal monologue in the past year as I argue with myself in a very schizo- and at times egocentric, manner. The scenarios aren’t rational. Frankly, it makes me uncomfortable, so that’s wonderful.” she tells, “I really wanted to create a body of work that lyrically didn’t shy away from mania, and sonically used sounds that were reminiscent of lots of genres.”

The EP opens with the enticing tuning of a classical group in ‘Letty’s Orchestra’, where you’re left wondering what the next 22 minutes might hold. It’s when ‘GULLY’s gentle folk-esque intro kicks in, that the journey on this project truly begins. ‘Jane Doe’ and ‘Peach Fuzz’, which arrive in the second half of the EP, are a personal highlight. Both sport a super classic feel (in a 2010s UK, indie-electronica kind of way) with León’s vocals echoing through both tracks emulating thoughts bouncing around the mind’s walls.

Although León is the talented crafter behind every track, from production to vocals, her ‘Bleach’ EP holds the energy of a neat and perfectly curated playlist. This is thanks to its eclectic sonics and all of which are tightly bound by her signature stamp. Having treated listeners with this generous extended project, the exciting UK riser Yaz León is well and truly enticing us with what’s to come and we can’t wait to witness it.
