Fresh off the back of his first charting single, ‘Toxic (Freestyle)’, Songer returns with bar-heavy new track ‘WIDE AWAKE’.
A pitched-down vocal section acts as the hook, blending into the soulful instrumental. Bouncy drums accompany as Songer sets off into a verse containing his signature sharp lyricism. Themes of escapism and the dichotomy between external socialising and internal struggles of the mind are delicately explored. Speaking on the track, Songer explained,
“WIDE AWAKE is a song that balances the chaotic excitement of partying, with the complexities of having a mind that doesn’t sleep. With a pitched down chorus and a beat that changes constantly throughout, it’s a journey of all the cause and consequence of nights out. This varies from women, to dancing, to the need to distract yourself from your own reality.”
The instrumental changes in this song are particularly interesting. In the second half Songer experiments with Jersey-club style instrumentation, with that bouncy kick pattern merging brilliantly with his flow. An exciting development in Songer’s sonic choices, this section stands out as a highlight.
‘WIDE AWAKE’ is taken from an upcoming nine-track project from Songer. Whilst details on this are limited, it’s due to be a special moment in the rap landscape this year. Particularly when looking at the strength of this first single.
