Portraits of Tracy has announced new EP Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate A: MTV!, sharing its first single ‘Caught In A Jam’ ahead of the project’s release on 24th July.

The Baton Rouge producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist first found an audience online as a teenager, building a reputation for pushing pop into unexpected places. Now, after years of cultivating an unmistakable sound, Portraits of Tracy is entering a new phase with a project that appears set to introduce a fuller picture of the artist behind the music.
Leading the announcement is ‘Caught In A Jam’, a track that opens with a metronomic beat before guitars gradually enter the mix. The vocals take their time to arrive, but when they do everything clicks into place. Distorted in a way that feels slightly unusual but completely intentional, Portraits of Tracy’s delivery gives the song a personality that is difficult to ignore.
Speaking about the single, Tracy described it as “a brash love letter” to artists including Gary Numan, Squeeze, Tom Tom Club and Queen, combining a fascination with space-age sounds and late-’70s urgency.
There is a distinctly retro feel running throughout the track, but it never feels trapped in the past. Pulling from rock, synth-pop and alternative influences, ‘Caught In A Jam’ feels playful from start to finish, with a groove that quietly demands your attention. By the time the chorus arrives, it’s difficult not to find yourself tapping along.
The accompanying video embraces that same playful spirit. Dressed in a 1960s-inspired space suit and dropped into a cardboard city under alien attack, Portraits of Tracy leans fully into the retro sci-fi aesthetic. It is knowingly over-the-top, but that is exactly why it works, matching the colourful energy of the track while helping establish the creative world surrounding the release.
The new EP follows 2023’s Drive Home and continues Portraits of Tracy’s genre-hopping approach. Drawing from influences spanning classic rock, hip-hop, R&B, soul and psychedelic indie music, the project is built around themes of identity, belonging and self-discovery. Speaking on the project, Tracy said:
“Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate? A: MTV! is a loud and playful glimpse into who I am as a person and a musician.”
That openness feels like the defining theme of this new era. While Portraits of Tracy first gained attention through online curiosity and experimentation, this release feels like a clearer introduction to the artist behind the music.
With ‘Caught In A Jam’ offering the first glimpse into the project, Q: From Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate A: MTV! already feels every bit as colourful and unpredictable as its title suggests. If the rest of the EP carries the same energy, Portraits of Tracy may have something genuinely memorable on her hands.
