Medium Build, the artistic endeavour of Nick Carpenter, has been rapidly building excitement with a string of releases over the last year.
The latest, ‘Cutting Thru The Country’ arrives alongside the announcement of the greatly anticipated album, ‘Country’, due April 5th.
In this captivating new single, Nick grapples with his full range of emotions over understated production. The vulnerability that has come to be expected from Nick’s work is on full show here, with the track immediately resonating with his listeners. When talking about the making of the song, Medium Build says,
"This was the only song I wrote while Jake and I were in the studio. In August, while I was driving from Alaska to Nashville, I started a little poem. I wanted it to feel like an Earl Sweatshirt song. Just bars, no chorus, no melody. We found an old keyboard and plugged it in. Found some wild tones and I did like 6 takes of the vocal. Probably the easiest tune we made on the album.”
It can almost be hard to believe the ease with which this song was made. Upon listening it feels so emotionally rich that you’d assume it was a painstaking endeavour. Perhaps, the success of this song is in its simplicity and rawness.
All of the excellent singles Medium Build has been releasing suggest his album is due to be a career defining moment. It feels as though he has tapped into something special, with a core fanbase that couldn’t be more supportive.
Medium Build is currently on tour supporting UK star Holly Humberstone, as well as a series of headline shows, culminating in playing London’s Hoxton Hall. Taking place on the 20th of March, this is due to be a night to remember. With the album following up a couple weeks later, all the stars are aligning for Medium Build.
