Lewes-born artist Matilda Cole is poised to make waves with her latest single, ‘Shiny Things,’ the third track from her eagerly awaited EP 'Pomegranate', due for release next month. Following the success of previous singles like "Mortal" and "Big Mouth," Cole brings a fresh, audacious energy to the table with this new release.
‘Shiny Things’ is a testament to Cole’s versatility and creative depth. The track, which she crafted during a session in Brighton, blends country influences with her signature style, creating a dynamic and infectious sound. Exploring the theme of older men using younger women as status symbols, encapsulated in the provocative line, “how long till’ he trades you in?” The juxtaposition of a lively, bouncy chorus with poignant lyrics adds a layer of complexity to the track, making it one of the more playful yet incisive entries on the EP.
“‘Shiny Things’ is about older men using younger women as status symbols, who think ‘she is young therefore I am young’,” Cole explains. “It’s about leaching off youth and beauty. The idea had been on my mind for a while, so I wrote a monologue and developed the song from that. The section at the end is my favorite part of the EP—bouncy and full of life, adding a unique element not found elsewhere on the album.”
