Mahalia Commands Us To Dance On Her Latest Release ‘Instructions’

Mahalia’s back. Instructions lands as the second single of her Luvergirl era, following the Masicka-assisted Different Type Of Love. Where that leaned romantic, Instructions throws itself straight into the dancefloor.
Mahalia

This one’s full-body. It locks into a pulsing groove, but Mahalia’s voice still leads. She’s not just riding the beat, she’s directing it. The concept’s simple: sometimes, the best nights are the ones you don’t overthink. Instructions is a soundtrack to those nights. R&B at its core, but shaped for movement, not moodiness.

She’s said it came from dancing more, enjoying the rhythm of a night out without overloading it with meaning.

“It feels like the era of girls just taking back a bit of our fucking control, you know, not being slut-shamed, not being taken the piss out of, not being told that we can’t do. It’s not that I’m talking about all those issues in the music, but that’s where I was at when I was creating it. And it’s funny because in all the songs, really and truly, it’s me telling these men what to do in a sense.”

The video, directed by Douglas Reddan, sticks to that loose, late-night feel. Bright lights, fast cuts, bold colours. It’s low-concept and high-vibe, a visual that lives in the moment like the track does.

This isn't Mahalia abandoning storytelling, but it is her shifting the tone. She’s been vocal about wanting to lean into joy, dance, and lightness.

The new single does that without diluting anything. There’s still commentary in the background. Her quote about “girls taking back a bit of our fucking control” makes it clear that this is about space, about owning movement, pleasure, and presence in the club without apology. She’s not preaching, but the message’s in the energy.

Coming off her headline slot at Little Simz’s Meltdown and an appearance at GQ’s Music & Style dinner, Mahalia is entering this next phase with confidence. Instructions isn’t trying to be deep, it’s trying to move you. And it does.
