JEMS!, the collaborative powerhouse formed by Oakland’s Elujay and Baltimore’s J.Robb, is back with their new single “CREEPIN,” and it’s as smooth as you’d expect from these two visionaries.
This track is a soulful shuffle through ’90s pop nostalgia, complete with infectious hooks, laid-back harmonies, and an undeniable groove that only these two could pull off. It’s the perfect preview of their upcoming album ‘GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II,’ dropping September 20th.
Recorded in Elujay’s hometown of Oakland with his live band, “CREEPIN” was born from a collaboration with Bay-area producer Hokage Simon. The track’s chill yet captivating vibe captures the essence of UK street soul, infusing it with a West Coast twist that makes it feel both nostalgic and fresh. This single follows the release of their energetic track "FLIGHTS," which blends R&B, dance, and reggae into a vibrant mix that’s impossible to resist.
Elujay and J.Robb’s latest project is the product of a deep, years-long friendship, with ‘GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II’ representing the perfect fusion of their unique talents. Their shared experiences in UK nightlife have deeply influenced this album, as the duo pulls from the rich sounds and rhythms of the African diaspora that thrive within London’s vibrant club scene. The result is a sonic journey through old-school R&B, hip-hop, Lovers Rock, dancehall, and contemporary indie-genres that reflect their shared Caribbean heritage and love for innovative music.
The album also features exciting collaborations with artists like Amaria, Chase Shakur, Louis Culture, and Rae Khalil, each bringing their own flavor to the project. The result is a collection of tracks that feel both comfortably familiar and exhilaratingly fresh. As Elujay puts it, “CREEPIN” is one of his favorite songs to date, originally written with the intention of pitching it to a big artist. But after seeing J.Robb’s visceral reaction to the track, he knew it had to stay with JEMS!.
The entire album, like its predecessor ‘GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE,’ is an exploration of finding beauty and inspiration in the unexpected corners of urban life; a “diamond in the rough,” as Elujay describes it. With artwork crafted by the renowned Frank Dorrey, who’s worked with the likes of Steve Lacy and Noname, ‘GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II’ is more than just an album; it’s a full-fledged artistic experience.
“CREEPIN” is just a taste of what’s to come; a feel-good anthem that promises to leave fans craving more from this extraordinary duo.
