Hackney-born artist J Appiah’s forward-thinking approach on new single “ONE THIRTY AM.” is eclectic like its maker: a globe-trotting Londoner with Ghanaian roots and a boundary-pushing mindset.
Appiah is paving the way for “That’s the Thing About Time (Part One)”, his new EP set for release later this year. With its edgy, electronic influences and meditative lyrics “ONE THIRTY AM.” exemplifies an artist's intent on connecting with listeners on an intimate level. Self-produced by J, alongside ferg. and mixed in Japan with Alan Dobson, the track implores listeners to live in the moment and surrender to art.
Accompanied by visuals directed by Ryan McKey and produced by Kola Bello, mixing the world of analogue and digital. J is seen performing in a dark and gritty basement as his image is scattered across TV screens of yesteryear. This recording follows an active few years which saw J Appiah spend much of 2023 performing throughout Europe, Australia, and North America.
"ONE THIRTY AM. is a bit of a toxic love song. It’s about dancing through the madness, the rhythms embody the tick of time's clock. It reminds me that we’re all just doing the dance.” J explains when asked about the inspiration for the track.
