Girl Group have released their debut EP, Think They’re Looking, Let’s Perform, six tracks of no-filter, high-energy alt-pop that flips the idea of the girlband on its head. It’s loud, bratty, and smart as hell.

This isn’t a passive listen. There are teeth behind every hook. Whether it’s the deadpan sarcasm of Man Made Girlbands or the no-holds-barred emotion of Shut Your Mouth (Sometimes), Girl Group write like they’ve got something to say, and they do. Their dynamic as a five-piece is tight, built from years of living, studying, and making music together in Liverpool.
The EP’s title comes from a familiar social tension: eyes on you, pressure to perform. It’s performance as self-defence, celebration, and satire, all at once. The band hosted a press conference at Boys Boys Boys Gallery in London to launch the project, moderating it themselves with help from journalist Emma-Louise Boynton. Think more zine fair than label showcase. The same goes for their house parties, club nights, and off-the-cuff gigs, which feel more like community than clout.
If you want polish and polish only, look elsewhere. Girl Group bring mess, meaning, and melody in equal measure. There’s a reason Flink Pike hits like it does: the visuals reference Coppola, but the message is razor-sharp. It’s a track about being boxed in by “good girl” expectations, delivered in smirking harmony with a wink and a middle finger.
Girl Group are in the process of building their own world - by women, for women, and unapologetically female. Think They’re Looking, Let’s Perform is just the start.
