Finn Askew Leans Into Chaotic Energy On New Single ‘Distance’

Finn Askew leans into a more chaotic headspace on Distance, a late-night single built around tension, impulse and mixed signals.

Rather than telling a clear story, the track sits in a feeling. It captures that stretch of time where everything feels slightly heightened, where decisions don’t quite land, and emotions hang longer than they should. It’s not reflective in the usual sense, more caught in the moment as it plays out.

Produced by Ezra Skys, the track keeps its structure tight while letting the edges blur. Guitar textures thread through the beat, with soft R&B elements sitting just beneath the surface. Finn’s vocal moves easily across it, shifting between melody and a more detached delivery without forcing either.

It also marks a continuation of his working relationship with Skys, with who he’s collaborated with across the upcoming mixtape. The two have built that sound together over time, already linking on Green Light, Move On and Vows, each release nudging things further away from straightforward pop.

There’s a noticeable shift in tone here. Earlier tracks felt more direct, more resolved. Distance doesn’t look for that. It leans into something less settled, letting the tension sit rather than trying to clean it up. That approach ties into where Askew sees himself right now. “Finding yourself,” he says, “that is the most challenging part but also the most rewarding. And right now, I feel closer to it than ever.”

Raised in Somerset, he first broke through during the pandemic with Roses, before building a following that now stretches well beyond the UK. Support from artists like SZA, Kehlani and Justin Bieber has only added to that momentum, but Distance feels less concerned with scale and more focused on direction.

With a new mixtape landing in April, the track sets a tone that feels more instinctive than before. It doesn’t try to resolve the tension. It just stays with it.
