Having teased a string of balmy singles featuring Kofi Stone, Jelani Blackman, Iyamah and Superlative, edbl finally dropped his collaborative triumph ‘2010 Mixtape’ last Thursday.
It’s hip-hop’s colour, tempo and groove that edbl fell wholeheartedly in love with during his time at university, and years later, as a seminal component of the producer’s sonic identity, it’s hip-hop that forges the foundation of his latest offering ‘2010 Mixtape’.
As he shares this ode to the genre, capturing hip-hop’s poetic DNA and eclectic essence through the album, the talented producer and multi-instrumentalist crafts a backdrop of classy, jazz-centric chords and vibrant keys that unwind through his distinctive balmy production.
Since first releasing in 2019, edbl has made his mark on the scene through his generous catalogue, which boasts an even more generous lineup of rappers, vocalists and producers from Mom Tudie and Isaac Waddington to Kieron Boothe. Continuing his unique collaborative approach to music on ‘2010 Mixtape’, edbl sets the stage for a host of exciting UK guests such as vocalist Iyamah, alt R&B artist KeepVibesNear, and rappers jayahadadream, Jelani Blackman, Guvna B and more.
Every track on ‘2010 Mixtape’ introduces a new protagonist, chronicling their experiences. We hear them telling stories of self-expression, love, the pursuit of dreams and life’s trials. UK rapper Kofi Stone can be heard on the colourful and Latin-flaired ‘Lena’, while MANIK MC raps atop ‘Arcades’ laidback keys, and even Manchester’s own Meduula’s cool cadence accompanies the melodic ‘Alls My Life’.
‘2010 Mixtape’ provides a luscious 13 track collection of hip-hop, soul, R&B and jazz sounds, all forged with a deep passion from edbl and his collaborators. Following the triumphant project that is ‘2010 Mixtape’, and a string of successful sold out shows this past year, edbl’s name continues to precede him. 2024 seems to be an exciting year ahead for the London-based producer.
