Doechii Reconnects with SZA for 'girl, get up.' to Round off her Biggest year yet

A surprise single release from Florida’s very own powerhouse Doechii is the best late Christmas gift. Truly a very late present: dropping just before New Year’s Eve, Doechii has some things to get off her chest and reunites with fellow TDE superstar SZA to clear the air.

Doechii

In early February, I wrote an article celebrating Doechii’s GRAMMY win for best rap album, making her the third Black woman rapper to win this award in GRAMMY history. This was a significant and meaningful milestone for her, and it was well deserved. I noted that this was “Doechii’s decade. Mark my words.” I still firmly believe this as she continues to prove it.

Her second surprise release of the year, ‘girl, get up.’ is a richly arranged success, where Doechii openly addresses her challenges: the internet backlash before her re-release of ‘Anxiety,’ industry plant speculations, misogyny, and racism—all while hinting at her eagerly awaited debut album. “They callin’ me intellect amongst the pussy rap, I still be poppin’ pussy, them my sisters, so I can’t agree with that." It stands as a strong testament to resilience, not just endurance. It's also her last entry in her fantastic Swamp Sessions series, in which she creates a track in under an hour. It's a tremendous display of skill, and what better way is there to close off one of the biggest years of your career?

The track has a delicate feel, flowing with a breezy energy. Producer Jay Versace samples Birdman's ‘What happened to that boy?’ and blends the Neptunes’ drum pattern into a sexier, more confident sound, while Doechii’s verses cut through fiercely. SZA elevates the track during the chorus with confident, affirming hooks that complement Doechii’s sharp bars. Their connection feels stronger than ever, significantly enriching the track, though it isn’t as evident as in their previous collaboration, ‘Persuasive’.

This track signals a shift. It's a new year, a new Doechii, and if the album cover is anything to go by, she’s prepared to move away from the past and step into the future. We know some topics will be addressed, but the anticipated debut is still shrouded in mystery. However, what I do know is: it's going to be huge.
