The South London singer and producer turns losing money into a playful daydream of millionaire life on her first single of 2026.
Losing a bunch of money is a pretty rubbish way to find inspiration. For dexter in the newsagent, “Fantasy” turns exactly that into something much sweeter: a daydream about the kind of wealth you imagine before you know how expensive being alive actually is.
The South London singer and producer wrote the track earlier this year after losing money and “feeling quite lost”. Her response was to fall into YouTube videos of cars driving through rich neighbourhoods and start wondering what life might look like on the other side.
“I wanted to write a song about money from the perspective we all have when you’re a kid and you just wonder what it’s like to have a big fancy car, walk in wardrobe or a chef,” she explains.
No spreadsheets, investments or sensible financial planning here. “Fantasy” takes that uncomplicated childhood idea of being rich and boils it down to one very direct wish: I wanna be a millionaire.
It suits an artist who has never seemed particularly bothered about staying in one musical lane. Dexter can move from quiet guitar writing into R&B, pop and electronic production without making any of it feel like a costume change. There is still a scrappy, DIY quality holding things together, but trying to neatly file her under one genre misses half the fun.
The video commits to the idea too. Directed by Iris Luz, it puts dexter inside a neon phone booth in an open field as banknotes fly around her. If you are going to imagine yourself suddenly filthy rich, you may as well go all in.
“Fantasy” is dexter’s first new song of 2026, following last year’s Time Flies, a project shaped by grief, love and growing up.
Now she is letting herself dream a little bigger, preferably with the bills paid and somebody else doing the cooking.
Fair enough, really.
