BINA Brings Tkay Maidza Into Her Soft Rage Era On ‘R U OK’

BINA links with Tkay Maidza on “R U OK” as the London artist turns the ideas behind her recent music into forthcoming mixtape Soft Rage.

BINA has linked with Tkay Maidza for “R U OK”, the latest single leading towards her new mixtape Soft Rage, due 6 November.

The collaboration arrives at an important point in BINA’s current run, but Soft Rage is the more interesting part of the story. The phrase hasn’t appeared from nowhere for a new campaign. It has been sitting within BINA’s music for some time.

BINA previously described “Dopamine” as foundational to her “Soft Rage” sound, while more recent single “The Art of Anger” pushed directly into the emotions behind it. Anger became something to acknowledge rather than suppress, alongside a musical shift that has increasingly pulled rock and punk textures into the R&B, neo-soul and jazz foundations of her earlier work.

Tkay Maidza’s presence on “R U OK” fits comfortably within that movement without pulling the focus away from BINA. The collaboration sits inside a direction BINA had already begun defining before Soft Rage had a project title attached to it.

There is something particularly effective about finally putting Soft Rage on the front of a full project. The name holds two feelings that are usually treated as opposites: softness doesn’t cancel out anger, and anger doesn’t require softness to disappear.

That tension has become increasingly central to BINA’s recent music.

Soft Rage therefore feels less like the beginning of a new era than the naming of one already underway. “R U OK” might bring Tkay Maidza into the picture, but the bigger story is BINA making that direction explicit and preparing to give it a full project of its own.
