Apple Music Hall Is Built For What Happens After The Gig

Set to open inside Battersea Power Station, Apple Music Hall pairs a 600-capacity live room with Spatial Audio mixing, multitrack recording, multicamera capture and broadcast infrastructure built into the venue itself.

Apple Music Hall is set to open inside Battersea Power Station with a 600-capacity live room and a production setup built far beyond the scale of the audience in front of it.

Behind its 11.6 m reconfigurable stage sit two dedicated recording and mix studios, a 48-speaker Spatial Audio system and a purpose-built broadcast control room fed by 16 or more cameras, with iPhone capture able to run alongside them.

Apple says performances can be captured as multitrack recordings, mixed in Spatial Audio live or afterwards, filmed across multiple cameras and prepared as broadcast-ready productions from the same building. Shows from Apple Music Hall will also be livestreamed globally.

The room may be intimate, but the production chain is built to carry a performance far beyond Battersea.

Apple has done live music at this scale before. The iTunes Festival launched in London in 2007 and later became the Apple Music Festival, with performances already reaching audiences around the world live and on-demand. The difference with Apple Music Hall is not global reach. It is permanence: the recording, mixing and broadcast operation is built into the venue itself rather than assembled around a temporary run of shows.

The move also extends beyond the stage. Apple says all of Apple Music Radio’s London-based hosts and shows will broadcast from new studios at Battersea Power Station, putting its London radio operation alongside the new live venue.

What Apple has not announced is the part that matters next. The first performers are still unknown, there is no full public programme, and detailed ticket access has not yet been laid out beyond directing fans towards Apple Music Hall for upcoming show information.

The production setup is already ambitious. The artist programme now has to give the room a reason to matter.
