Alice Costelloe is stepping into a new chapter with her latest EP 'When It’s The Time,' set to drop on November 1st. This release marks her first time recording under her full name, moving away from the aliases that have previously marked her career.
With the EP’s title track already out, the anticipation for the full project is building. The EP explores deep and reflective themes, touching on mortality, growth, and the uncertainty of life, all delivered through her signature style; honest, raw, and relatable.
'When It’s The Time' signals a fascinating evolution in Costelloe’s sound, thanks in part to producer Mike Lindsay (known for his work with Laura Marling and Jon Hopkins), whose touch brought a whole new dimension to her songwriting. What started as a straightforward guitar-driven track about the end of a relationship shifted into something bigger after repeated visits from religious preachers at her home. These encounters pushed the song’s narrative into deeper territory, exploring the "end" not just of love, but of life and the world itself. The EP stands as a meditation on endings, while also yearning for more—whether it’s a dance, a drink, or a chance to reimagine your future.
Recorded at Lindsay’s Margate studio, MESS, in early 2023, the production on 'When It’s The Time' blends familiar, classic sounds with bold electronic elements. Costelloe's experiences recording with her band live on tour helped shape the initial sound, but with Lindsay’s experimental touch, the track evolved into something unexpected, fusing 60s-inspired rhythms with modern synth experimentation. This combination defines the entire EP, giving it a vibrant, fresh energy. The track even features Costelloe playing a real organ for the first time, adding a personal touch to the already unique production.
Alice Costelloe is no stranger to the music scene, having spent over a decade contributing to the indie landscape, from her work in 'Big Deal' to 'Superfood,' and now her solo ventures. This EP represents more than just her evolution as an artist; it’s a reflection of personal growth, wrapped in poetic introspection and addictive melodies.
With 'When It’s The Time' already creating a buzz and a showcase performance at Next Door Records in London, this EP promises to be a strikingly fresh yet deeply familiar addition to her catalogue, one that balances the heavy with the hopeful.
