Manchester’s hot topic Meekz has made his return to the game with the release of the highly-anticipated debut mixtape ‘Respect The Come Up’.
Before the release of this striking ten-track project, Meekz treated fans to the release of a KC Locke-directed music video for the project’s opening track ‘Say Less’ marking his return to the scene. Shot on the outskirts of his beloved manchester, the visuals see Meekz in his element making his presence felt and known. Carried by a piano-led instrumental paired with his instantly recognisable flow, ‘Say Less’ is a straight-talking introduction to what is an impressive and quality body of work.
“Respect The Come Up” has everything and more that you could want from his return. With his unique Mancunian lingo, impeccable tone, and compelling lyrics shining throughout the project, Meekz depicts his life in an emotional take that can only be provided within real rap. Packed full of vivid accounts of the trajectory of life in music, but above all else, it’s a moment of reflection. It’s about being intentional in pursuing your dreams and making something from nothing, yet at its core is self-love and acknowledging your self-worth. For Meekz, it’s a reminder to himself to respect how far he’s come to keep going.
“Respect The Come Up is not just a boast. I’ve lived in hostels. I’ve been homeless. I know what it means to have no bank account. The come up has really been amazing for me.” he reflects. “I have to respect how far I’ve come. And I’m not saying I’ve come all the way. But I have to respect it and I know my self-worth now. I’m here to fulfil my purpose. I think the tape shows that.”
With guest appearances from chart-scaling rappers Dave and Central Cee. Dave jumps on ‘Fresh Out The Bank’ - a fun, boisterous payday anthem, revealing Meekz’s flair for writing an infectious hook. Joined by Central Cee on ‘Don’t Like Drill’, Meekz's choppy flow is razor-sharp over the track’s head-turning percussion.
The project also includes pre-released singles ‘More Money’ and mixtape title track ‘Respect The Come Up’. Released last year along with a stellar visual directed by KC Locke, which saw Meekz take to the skies of London and later nominated for Video Of The Year at the GRM Daily Rated Awards.
Working with Clint of Corteiz on the mixtape promo, we’ve seen the duo team up for a limited edition run of ‘Meekz Rules The World’ tees which can be brought with a copy of the project. Is this something we can expect to see more of within the UK game seeing him do something similar for Central Cee?
With his long-awaited debut mixtape finally, here, Meekz is firmly poised as the scene’s next cherished musician.
