Gibbs and Apex
Lord Apex has long been cementing his name as one of Hip Hop’s most unique and exciting voices. The 26-year-old has a discography that is nothing short of incredible.

In the build-up to his new album, ‘The Good Fight’, he has now treated fans to three singles. ‘Blessings’ and ‘Smokers Lounge’ came before, with the latest being the brand new ‘Phoenix’, featuring US rap heavyweight Freddie Gibbs.

The Argov-produced track is a soul-infused delight, showcasing Apex’s immense lyrical prowess. The instrumental manages to be upbeat, yet mellow, which is something that could be said about Lord Apex’s musical style. Cold flows are in abundance, with lines delivered with the assurance of an artist who knows just how good he is. If he was ever in any doubt, in the past year AP has been invited on tour with both Freddie Gibbs and Action Bronson. Co-signs don’t get much more impressive than that within this vein of music.

To further that sentiment, we have the verse by Freddie Gibbs on ‘Phoenix’, again demonstrating the regard in which Lord Apex is held by his peers. In the second half of the track, Gibbs matches Lord Apex’s energy with a fantastic contribution. Stylistically, the artists complement each other impeccably. This is the kind of collaboration that makes complete sense on paper, and having materialised, it has certainly not disappointed.

Speaking on the track, AP expressed

“The inspiration behind making ‘Phoenix’ was just because I felt I was rising out the ashes of a volcano, I was going through so much while finishing the album”

The many trials and tribulations of life, in Lord Apex’s case, have translated to some very special creations. Lord Apex has managed to go three-for-three with his singles in the build-up to this album. Everything is indicating this new project to be some of his best work to date. The contrasting nature of these singles suggests Lord Apex is pushing his creative boundaries yet again.

If I were to put money on it, I’d have 'Phoenix’ to be one of the most loved, and most successful songs on the album. It showcases everything his fans already love about Lord Apex and more, with the magnificent guest verse being the cherry on top.
